Settling in a New Place

While I don’t claim to be a master of anything… I may be as close to it as possible when it comes to finding a routine in a new place.

There are a couple key pillars that help me settle in, and then I feel the rest falls right into place.

Sleep Set Up

If my sleep is out of whack, I don’t expect any “lifestyle hack” to help get in me on track in a new place. Sleep is a piece of the puzzle I neglected for so long, and boy, does it make a difference.

Setting up the bedroom with the best temperature (the colder the better), organic cotton sheets on the mattress asap, and getting the room as dark as possible are the main points I try to hit as soon as I am in a new home.

Typically, a blackout curtain will do the trick to get the room as close to pitch black as possible. But sometimes (like this time) the window is too large for a tension rod. Thankfully, there are a couple of options on the market that are super cheap to block the light when you need it. Albeit, they are no sleek, stylish or aesthetic in anyway, but sometimes we have to make sacrifices (can’t believe I’ve gotten to this point- I know)!

Classes for Movement

When moving to a new place, you can get wrapped up in making the house a home. With that, movement can sometimes get pushed to the side. But I promise you, the boxes will still be there after a quick walk outside or a workout class.

In these times, I think booking a workout class is the best way to hold yourself accountable. Once it’s on the books, you’re committed to carving that hour of time out for moving your body (and getting out of the piles of boxes)!

An added benefit of the workout classes is getting to meet new people and see a new spot in your new neighborhood!

Hydrate

Hydration is the first thing that goes out the window when I am in a new place. It happens when I travel, and it definitely happens when moving to a new place and keeping incredibly busy with settling in.

Again, I rely on old habits that have proven to work. It’s an oldie but a goodie: track your intake! Yes it may be so simple, but it will make the difference.

You don’t need any fancy tracking water bottle for this; just set certain times in the day that you would like to finish the bottle you have!

Meals at Home

It is no secret: I would take a home-cooked meal over one out any day of the week.

A meal at home at the kitchen table signals something to me that “You can settle in.” It calms my entire system.

Good ingredients (local if you really want to go all out), slowing down, and keeping the routines that mean the most to you no matter where you’re at.
